 In Memory of Dr.Robert Hilliard


About the $1000 Bob Hilliard Memorial scholarship

On June 2,2022, Dr. Robert Hilliard, a retired Director of Secondary and Middle School Education at the University of West Georgia, established the "Bob Hilliard" scholarship award in collaboration with American Legion Post 143.

The mission of the American Legion Post 143 is to assist and support graduating high school seniors who plan to advance their educational experience through a University, College, or Technical College.

A $1000 scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior in good standing in the year that the scholarship is to be awarded and is accepted to and will be residing on or near the University, College or Technical school thy will be attending.

NOTE: Dr. Robert Hilliard passed away on January 29, 2024. May his legacy continue to illuminate the paths of those that have benefited from this scholarship.


 William T. Orr wins 3rd annual $1000 Scholarship

On May 15, 2025, Post 143 presented William Orr, a graduating senior from Villa Rica High School, with the 3rd annual Bob Hilliard Memorial Scholarship. Will is attending Gordon State College this Fall and will major in Mechanical Engineering. Lucy M. Barker Wins 2nd Annual $1000 Scholarship 

On 16 May 2024, Post 143 presented Lucy Barker, a Graduate from Central High School with  the 2nd annual   "Bob Hilliard Memorial Scholarship." Lucy will be attending The University of Alabama (Huntsville) and will be majoring in Kinesiology with a minor in Spanish. Addison Orr Wins 1st Annual $1000 Scholarship

On May 18 2023, Addison Orr, A graduate from Villa Rica High School, was the first recipient selected by Post 143 to win the "Bob Hilliard $1000 Scholarship" . *Due to an illness, Dr. Hilliard could not attend the presentation. However, a letter written by Bob was read aloud by Bill Hearnburg.  

 


Minimum Scholarship Eligibility Requirements for Graduating Seniors

a. Applicant must be a graduating High School Senior in good standing in the year the Post Scholarship is awarded and a resident of Carroll County

b. Applicant must attach and Official School Transcript for grades 9 through 12

c. Applicant must have a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale for grades 9-12

d. Attach a recommendation letter from a teacher or guidance counselor

e. the student must reside in or commute to the University, College, or Technical School attending

f. The  Scholarship Application package must be submitted to the guidance counselor's office on or before March 31. Deadline is March 31

Jessica R. Miller Wins $1000 DOG Scholarship

Jessica Rene Miller, a 2025 Graduate of Central High School was the recipient of the American Legion Department of Georgia $1000 scholarship. out of 210 Legion Posts in Georgia eligible to compete for this annual scholarship, Jessica was one of ony six recipients selected this year. She plans to attend the University of Georgia this fall, majoring in Actuarial Science, which focuses on financial risk assessment and forecasting. Jessica was sponsored by her mother, Rose Miller, an active member of American Legion Post 143 to make her eligible for the DOG scholarship.

Payton L. Terrell Wins $1000 DOG Scholarship

Payton, a graduate of Bremen High School, was the recipient of a $1000.00 Scholarship from the American Legion, The Department of Georgia for 2024. Only six scholarships were awarded throughout the state this year. Payton will be attending Augusta University and will be majoring in Early Childhood Education. Payton was sponsored by her granddad, Steve Holder, Member of Post 143, to make her eligible for the DOG scholarship.

Christopher Brett Gordon Wins $1000 DOG Scholarship

Congratulations Christopher, a 2023 Central High School graduate, was the 2023 American Legion, Department of Georgia $1000 Scholarship winner. Christopher will be attending Shorter Univerity and will be majoring in Religious studies/Ministry. Only six scholarships were awarded this year for the entire State of Georgia. He  was sponsored by his granddad, Post 143 Chaplain, Randy Knight, to make him eligible for the DOG scholarship.

About The Department of Georgia Scholarship
 
The American Legion, Department of Georgia $1000 scholarship application must include:
 
a. Name of American Legion Post 143 member sponsoring the applicant, relationship, and branch of service.
 
b. Accumulated Grade Point Average (GPA)
 
c. Class Ranking
 
d. Must attach official SAT/ACT record
 
e. Must have a 3.0 average on a scale of 4.0
 
f. Recommendation letter from high school Principal and Post 143 Commander
 
g. Must reside and attend a  high school in Georgia
 
h. Must be a child or grandchild of an active member of Post 143
 
i. The completed application package must be submitted to the post by the sponsoring parent or grandparent on or before the third week in April
